To the Administration and Vice Chancellors of Australian Universities, We have become aware of Professor John Dwyer and the Australia sceptics attempt to close down University courses in Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) - Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), Naturopathy and Chiropractic therapies. Professor Dwyer and his group do not speak for the majority of Australians nor do they speak for the majority of academics. Professor Dwyer speaks for a small handful of disenfranchised academics and members of the medical establishment who seek to maintain their monopoly in medicine. Prof Dwyer shows a blinkered scientific bias with his claims that "there is no research to prove Complementary and Alternative Medicine is effective". The universities should not give any weight to Professor Dwyer and his colleges scientifically ignorant and bias comments. Without University training, practitioners of TCM, Naturopathy and Chiropractic modalities would not be equipped with research skills needed to provide such evidence based therapies to the public. These skills are needed to work alongside other medical professionals in the mainstream medical fields. These skills are also a requirement of registration which helps regulate the industry, helping to keep the public safe. University courses offered in these modalities encourage practitioners to pursue further academic research and studies, hence the continuing search and testing evidence that Prof Dwyer calls for. Without university courses in these subjects there would be little scientifically based evidence being generated. The different modalities offer a different perspective to the current models of thought and thus challenge and test these established paradigms. Without contributions from TCM, Naturopathy and Chiropractic the medical status quo could not be tested or challenged. University education enhances CAM's ability to provide a high level of service to the public. There are now many Chinese immigrants who use and rely upon TCM on a daily basis and a University education in TCM allows practitioners to deliver high level of service in this regards. Prof Dwyer and his group have the right to differ in opinion but they do not have the right to mislead the public with regards to their claim of no evidence. They are misinformed at best and deliberately misleading at worst. With regards to Chinese medicine the Chinese journals are full of scientific evidence. Prof Dwyer does not read this information. This is scientific bias. We are very worried that the universities may interpret this group’s opinion as representing the wider public or academic spectrum, it does not. The opinions of these people represent their own interests. We call upon the Administration and Vice Chancellors of Australian Universities not to give any credence to this group. We ask the University administration and Vice Chancellors to continue with courses in CAM. Yours sincerely
